Episode Review: Transformers S02 Ep23 – “Blaster Blues”

“Yeah, music’s the universal language!”

Spike, Carly and Blaster (disguised in alt-mode) are enjoying a rock concert. Wanting to share the concert with his auto-buds, Blaster transmits the concert to the rest of the Autobots, to the delight of some and the dismay of others!

Meanwhile, at an observatory, Professor Haley is using his Voltronic Galaxer to attempt to contact alien life. Amusingly, his transmission is responded to by alien life that’s already close to home – Megatron and the Decepticons. Chaos ensues and the professor calls for help from the Autobots.

The Autobots barely hear the distress call over Blaster’s concert transmission, and unfortunately arrive at the scene too late, after the Decepticons have already made away with the Voltronic Galaxer.

“We’ll get it back for you professor”

The Autobots are spread out, looking for the Voltronic Galaxer, and it gets discovered in the most unlikely of places – the moon! Cosmos, with Blaster onboard discover them, but are ultimately captured by Astrotrain and taken to Megatron.

Megatron uses Blaster to amplify the power of the Galaxer’s transmissions, which he uses to disrupt radio communications on earth. Planes, trains, and automobiles are all disrupted as all radio communications are cut out.

“Greetings humans, I am Megatron, I am the Leader of the Decepticons, Ruler of planet Earth”

As the Autobots work furiously to rescue humans who have been trapped due to being unable to receive weather communications, Megatron’s voice comes over the airwaves, stating his intentions.

As the carnage on earth continues, the Decepticon jets add to the situation by staging relentless attacks on the Autobots. Meanwhile, Megatron states his demands; he will return Earth’s airwaves if humanity gives him all of their energy!

Luckily Blaster disrupts Megatron’s communications by replaying the rock concert transmission. Powerglide is able to track the transmission and find that it’s coming from the moon.

“Must rescue our Autobot Comrades”

Omega Supreme takes a wounded and unconscious Optimus Prime, along with Spike, Carly, and Powerglide to the moon on a rescue mission. They arrive just in time to stop Megatron from blasting Blaster. Omega Supreme goes on a one-bot mission to stop Megatron and the Decepticons, that is until Optimus Prime revives and joins the fight. While the battle rages outside the Decepticon base, Blaster and Cosmos destroy the Galaxer, releasing Megatron’s grip on the airwaves, just as Optimus Prime releases Megatron’s physical grip on him. Realising Prime and Omega Supreme have gotten the best of them, Megatron and the Decepticons flee to fight another day.

Key Scenes, Plot Points and Characters:

Blaster obviously features prominently in this episode, but so do Omega Supreme, Cosmos, and Astrotrain. It’s great to see all of them get screen time, and also to see Astrotrain’s triple changer abilities being used to good effect in the storyline. Due to the Decepticon attacks and the Autobots having to work to clear up the carnage, lots of other bots get screen time too.

The Verdict:

An episode which I’ve perhaps not given enough credit in the past, very enjoyable, lots of action, 9 energon cubes out of 10!

Afterthoughts:

This episode is very entertaining, I’m not quite sure why it’s gone under my personal radar in terms of great episodes to watch in the past. I’m definitely looking forward to watching it again and would encourage you to give it a watch if you’ve never seen it or haven’t watched it for a while!
