The Transformers Season 1 Closing Thoughts

Season one may only have been 16 episodes long, but it squeezed some of the most iconic episodes and moments into those episodes. It was truly a fantastic start for the franchise and did an amazing job of capturing the minds, hearts, and imaginations of its viewers.

The epic and unforgettable “More Than Meets The Eye” three part episode that kicked off the series did a very good job of establishing the dominant personalities of Optimus Prime and Megatron and the different lenses through which they see their battlefields. Megatron with his determination to conquer at all costs, and Prime with his determination to protect and seek peace at all costs.

The way the Transformers were able to assume earth-based modes through Teletraan-1’s role in their revival was cleverly thought out and the supporting roles of the other main characters were established early. Particular standouts are Starscream’s back-stabbing nature, Soundwave’s sneakiness and Bumblebee’s bravery in spite of his diminutive size.

As the season goes on, we’re introduced to the Space Bridge, which would go on to become an important feature in the plots of many future episodes, and we’re also introduced to the Dinobots, Insecticons, and Constructicons.

One of the things that is done really well in introducing all of these new and exciting characters, is making sure that they’re not generic. All of the characters demonstrate their unique, well thought our character traits. Even the seekers, who have the same physical design, and some of the Autobot cars who share similar designs such as Prowl and Bluestreak, have their own individuality.

The season ends on a real high in my opinion, with “Heavy Metal War” being one of the best episodes. In some ways, this episode brings season one full circle. One of the main features in “More Than Meets The Eye” is that Megatron and Optimus Prime regularly seek each other out one on one whenever the Decepticons and Autobots meet in battle, and this final episode of the series is all about Megatron challenging Optimus Prime to a one on one battle with no help from their warriors.

Before moving on to the season two reviews, I’d like to reflect on what I think are some of the standout moments from this season:

  • Optimus Prime and Megatron battling atop Sherman Dam, with Megatron wielding his energon mace and Prime using his energon axe.
  • The Rain Maker Seekers creating acid rain on Cybertron.
  • The Decepticons finding Skyfire buried in the Ice.
  • The introduction of the Dinobots.
  • Soundwave sneaking around to observe the Dinobots.
  • Megatron finding the escape pod that the Insecticons had used to travel to Earth.
  • The introduction of the Constructicons.
  • Megatron receiving his warriors’ powers from the power transfer machine.
  • The battle between the Dinobots and Devastator.
  • Optimus Prime blasting Megatron into the lava.

Truly a fantastic series, which had a lot of effort and thought put into it and established a firm foundation to build upon.

As we look forward to season two, if there are any iconic moments from this season not listed that really stood out for you, feel free to let us know in the comments.
